Divorce rates do, indeed, seem to be falling. When couples marry later, they have a better chance of making a good marriage. Some of the risk factors for divorce are: Marriage age (the older the better), education level, the weather in one's home state, and whether or not one's city has a Major League Baseball team. Of course, the real predictor of success in marriage is probably each partner's commitment to each other.

This book introduces the Judeo-Christian Model of Peacemaking. It outlines the peacemaking process that is patterned after the way God makes peace with us. You will greatly benefit from this work if you are: (1) personally experiencing conflict, (2) concerned about tensions in your church, or (3) want to learn how to become a peacemaker. Illustrations from all over the globe saturate the book to captivate your interest and bring clarity. Subjects covered include mediation, justice, shalomic peace, humanizing one’s enemy, acknowledgment of wrongdoing, apology, reparations, faith, forgiveness, reconciliation, and problem-solving. There are special sections that specifically apply to church conflict. Reviewer’s comments have ranged from “eminently practical” and “must-have resource” to “brilliant” and “new gold standard.” Accompanying study guides for small group discussion are available free of charge at www.HopeintheFaceofConflict.com.

It is often reported that 9 of 10 married woman who seek addiction treatment and stay sober for an extended period of time get divorced. Why do you think the divorce rate is so high? My suspicion is that the husband is less likely to get involved in support programs and resents the attention their wives get in and give to their 12-Step programs. Also remember because the addict’s emotional growth was stunted when the active addiction started, they face many challenges for healthy relationships.

Dan,

I read your article and have to say it was very good. I do think that those going through divorce as quite often only looking at the situation through their own eyes and what they think a divorce will accomplish for them, leaving out of their thinking and reasoning the long term effects on not only themselves, but everyone else involved.

There are a couple of points that I disagree with. One is that divorce is a legal issue. While I understand your view is one of helping the person heal from difficulties and past trauma, etc., divorce is a spiritual issue. When two people are married and become "one", that is a spiritual joining by God and not merely a legal joining by a pastor or judge. That is why I don't believe that a marriage covenant can be broken by anything other than physical death...that is the very nature of a covenant, any covenant.

Further, if you look closely at the Bible, the OT does not "permit" divorce. In the Mosaic law, Moses was only regulating a practice that was ALREADY rampant among God's people. This is much like we regulate abortion or marijuana...it's a moral issue that the government is trying to keep the negative effects to a minimum through regulation. I've found that the majority of modern churches have turned away from what the Bible and Jesus actually taught concerning divorce. A great resource that I would highly recommend is the book Remarriage Is Adultery Unless... (http://www.davidpawson.com/anchor/anchor.nsf/WebItems/ARB.079). The author goes into great detail concerning divorce and remarriage, only speaking on what is taught in the Bible.

Jason
